Wrong Field?

My experiences and expertise:
- Full-blown Microsoft Development Tools & Platforms
- Web-based Enterprise Business Applications
- Microsoft SQL Server Database
- Visual Basic .NET
My new job:
- 80% Open Source (so called "Anti-Microsoft")
- 3D Modeling for Construction Industry
- May or may not be Microsoft SQL Server Database (perhaps MySQL)
- Either C# or Java
Questions:
- Am I in a right field?
- What is the purpose of hiring a 36 year-old guy with relatively highly paid salary in your organization? To get the instant contribution out of him and better ROI or to provide a learning pace for him while saving head count cost?
- Will you spend big money to hire a "fisherman" to hunt for "deer"?
