Love yourself? Or your company?

Recently, I have a very serious chest pain. By right, I should have gone for medical check up last Sunday, but due to a one-day outstanding job and company’s project deadline, I decided to postpone my medical check up to Tuesday, which means I decided to hold my pain for another one more day for the good of my company. But unfortunately, there is another unexpected change that needed me to hold my pain for another one more day. Therefore, I told my team, together with my boss, that I may not be able to work on Tuesday due to important medical check up. The doctor may want me to get admitted to hospital. At this moment, some said you can bring your notebook and work in the hospital; some asked if I got my own insurance to claim from etc.
Well… the truth is, company is not our parents or family members. The only thing that I neglect is to love myself more. We can’t ask for love, but the only person who can give us unlimited love without any condition is OURSELVES.
No matter how good a company is, by the time you are in urgent need or emergency, the first question in their mind is: "What’s the impact to the company if you’re on mc?". The best example is one of the companies that I worked before. They always stress on "WE ARE A BIG FAMILY". They even take this as a reason in asking all the staffs to paint the entire office building during weekends. But when I was having a big trouble until I needed to leave the company immediately without able to give two months notice, I had been insisted to pay for the two months in lieu of payment, no exception and no discount. The amount is quite big due to my salary level and considerably big to an individual like me.
My conclusion is, if eventually, a clear line still need to be drawn, why selling your life to the company? While the remuneration that given by the company will be ended at the end of your service, your health that you sacrifice during your service will be carried forward, even after you have left the company. That kind of abnormal lifestyle may lead you to a serious illness when your old days come.
So? Love yourself? Or your company? If you still think that without your company, you can’t survive, then my advice is: Make sure you can make yourself alive before you can make your company survive.
